For this year’s John Lewis Christmas campaign we created the magical world of Unexpected Guest. A tale of 14-year-old Nathan, who discovers a space traveller, Skye, who has landed in the woods beside his home.
As he introduces her to the season’s traditions, from decorating the tree to eating mince pies, their friendship develops and we see the magic of Christmas through the eyes of someone experiencing it for the very first time.
We kicked off two days before launch with a mysterious spaceship landing in key cities, creating intrigue across the country, before dropping hints across social. As the film premiered, it was swiftly followed by a bespoke Twitter emoji, Snapchat filters, Instagram Stickers, gifs and an online 360 virtual experience of the world built for myJL customers, with all the activity being promoted by John Lewis’ family of Partners themselves.
